Before things got underway at a recent MLTI HS training in Rockand I booted up my MacBook and anticipated all the new things I would learn that day. My experience is always to drive away smiling but when I try to recall this or that little nugget--well, sometimes I -er, -uh, I can't remember! So I decided to make a list and email it to myself. I thought something here might be useful to you also!
NoteShare
1. Some useful shortcuts...
| a. To add a new entry on a page, use the enter key (not to be onfused with the RETURN key). |
| b. To add a new section or page, while in Table of Contents and cursor is in a section or page, hit enter twice. |
| c. Sometimes you want to copy typed content from a document directly to a NoteShare page. Select all and drag the opened document content while holding down the apple key. Although you may have to edit the formatting a bit the typed content is copied. |
| d. To embed a document that when clicked will open in a separate window within its own program, drag the document into a NoteShare page while holding down the ctrl key. |
| e. To collect a NoteBook of Web sites on a particular search term create/save a NoteBook, go to Scripts/ Web Research Agents/ MegaSearch-orig. Each "hit"can be viewed/evaluated for deletion or relevance on its own page. |
|
d. To collect all the sites from a particular Web page into a NoteBook, create/save a NoteBook, go to Scripts/Web Research Agents/ Extract Web links to section. An entire Web page of sites/links can be gathered up this way--from a PortaPortal page, for instance. |
| e. Images way too BIG? To resize/scale an image before inserting it into a NoteBook, highlight/select image, right click ( see #4 below), scale image, choose a percent. |
2. How to "tear off" a page and put it into a shared NoteBook--Useful for collecting student work or sharing collaborative work with colleagues, open a shared NoteBook and everyone can "tear off" their page and drag it to your Table of Contents--you have it ALL! Create and share a NoteBook, go to Preferences/Toolbar, select Page Folio and move the Page Folio symbol "Up" until it is next to the page view percent window. Turn your NoteBook to Table of Contents and watch. Others change their page name to reflect their identity, open your shared NoteBook and drag the Page Folio symbol to your Table of Contents. Voila! You have evryone's work in one NoteBook.
3. Many NoteShare NoteBooks created by the MLTI staff and other teachers are being shared on the ACTEM server and you can easily explore and get them. To access the NoteShare NoteBooks being shared on the ACTEM server open NoteShare. Go to Sharing/ Open Shared NoteBooks/ select the plus symbol, type noteshare.actem.org, select Actem Noteshare. See dozens of shared notebooks; the password to all of them is actem. This is also a place where you can share your own NoteBooks for use wth your students in an online format. Just let me know if you are interested.
Mac OS Tips
